The incident took place around 3:30 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 6 in Manchester when officers responded to the area of Hamlin Street for a report of the theft.
According to Lieutenant Ryan Shea, of the Manchester Police Department, an area resident, hearing what he believed to be a power saw, looked outside and saw an unfamiliar dark gray vehicle, parked backward in his driveway with three men standing near his neighbor's vehicle.
The man went outside to confront the men and saw another man lying underneath the vehicle with a saw used to cut the catalytic converter, Shea said.
After confronting the group, one of the men drew a handgun and pointed it at the resident. A second man also displayed a firearm, and the resident retreated quickly back inside, Shea said.
After closing the door, multiple gunshots were heard, and the vehicle fled the area at a high rate of speed, police said.
Responding officers began to canvass the area and verified that no one was injured by the shots that were fired.
Shell casings were located in the driveway of 51 Hamlin Street, and officers confirmed a catalytic converter was stolen, Shea said.
Additionally, the driver’s side window of the vehicle the catalytic converter was taken from was found smashed, he added.
Additional vehicles in the area of Pearl Street and Holl Street were located with smashed windows, and it is believed these incidents of criminal mischief are related, Shea said.
